What to expect

All the time, new people are walking through the doors of Chemainus United Church. We know that a church can be an intimidating place to walk into, especially if you have never been to one before. We sincerely hope that you will feel a sense of welcome to the community. Here are some things you may want to know.

Preparation and What to Wear:

You don’t need to do anything to come, just come. However, if you would like we’d be more than happy to tour you around on a weekday and show you the sanctuary. Sometimes people want to know what to wear? On average, the congregation wears “business casual” which is a way of saying they dress up, but not too fancy. Polo shirts with slacks or skirts and blouses are common. There is always a couple of people wearing jeans and others wearing suits. Whatever you feel comfortable it would be great. The service runs between 1 and 1.5 hours so you have an idea when it’s over. Of course, you are welcome to leave at any time. We have a simple lunch afterwards too so you can meet some people and have some food. Please feel free to stay.

Before The Service:

The service begins at 10:00 each Sunday morning. You might want to come a few minutes early, and hopefully, a few people will say “hi” to you. You will be met at the door by greeters.  You can sit in any pew. If you need a ramp to walk up, there is one on the side of the building for wheelchairs, strollers and walkers. We also have an electric wheelchair that can help people up the ramp.

During the Service:

We always like to welcome new people – If you feel comfortable singling yourself out, put up your hand when we ask. If you are coming with someone, they might introduce you to us.
The powerpoint slides on the screen will have the words to prayers and hymn lyrics to follow along. Generally, the people around you will know when to stand or sit.

Meditation – Almost every service, after the reading of the scripture, we have a time of meditation, marked by a singing bowl. It’s a way of centring ourselves.
Reflection – The reflection is usually about 15 minutes along.
Offering – Our church community operates with donations. Please know that there is absolutely no requirement that you donate. The offering plate will get passed by you. There’s no need to put anything into it. However, if you would like to donate, we’d be very grateful. Donations can be put in the envelope found in the pews and we can even mail you a tax receipt.
